Accidental Fire Causes Over $1.5 Million in Damages

If you don’t have a proper fire suppression system in your restaurant’s kitchen, you could be costing yourself a lot of money. Consider a recent article for the Orange County Register titled “Update: Garden Grove fire determined to be accidental kitchen fire that caused more than $1.5 million in damages.”

Alyssa Duranty of the Orange County Register writes, “A cloud of smoke blanketed a parking lot and nearby street Wednesday morning after an accidental kitchen fire inside a seafood restaurant caused more than $1.5 million in damages. The fire started around 3:20 a.m. inside Claws Restaurant, 12125 Brookhurst St., and quickly moved throughout the business, Garden Grove fire Capt. Thanh Nguyen said. Yellow and red fire trucks and engines overtook the parking lot shared by several other small businesses after 75 firefighters were called to the scene from Garden Grove, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach fire departments, along with Anaheim Fire & Rescue. ‘It was initially an interior attack, but due to the large volume of fire and reports of a possible roof collapse, firefighters evacuated and went into a defense mode,’ Nguyen said. Police closed Brookhurst Street between Chapman and Lampson avenues while firefighters battled the blaze. Two firefighters were positioned at the top of tall ladders on opposite sides of the building, pointing high-powered water hoses inside the business from above the roof. Officials knocked down the blaze by 6:10 a.m., but expected to stay at the restaurant to watch for hot spots. Firefighters continued to pump water into the charred building from above and ground level, sending more gray smoke into the streets. Investigators determined Friday that the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen, Nguyen said. It was unclear what sparked the flames. Across from the restaurant, gym goers were heading to Chuze Fitness on the other side of the parking lot.”
