The range hood in a commercial kitchen, also referred to as a vent hood or even an exhaust hood, serve many purposes but can actually begin to collect significant amounts of grime and grease if they’re not cleaned on a regular basis. This grease can become sticky, difficult to remove, and a significant fire hazard. HoodMart is here to offer some tips to ensure you’re following the right cleaning protocol.
How to clean grease receptacles
To completely clean your commercial exhaust hood, you’ll need to take it apart. First, take off the grease receptacles. They’re located on the sides of the hood and slide out easily. Dump any grease into a container and dispose of it according to your local laws – just be sure not to put it down the sink! Then soak your receptacles in a mixture of hot water and a detergent made for cutting through grease. Scrub the hood inside and out to get rid of any remaining grease. Once your receptacles are clean, let them dry before putting them back.
How to clean hood filters
While you have the grease receptacles out, remove the filters from your hood and soak them in the same detergent and hot water mixture we described above. If they’re very grease-heavy, then you may need to soak them overnight. Once they’ve soaked long enough, lightly scrub them to get rid of any remaining grease. You can also run them through your dishwasher. Make sure they’re dry before you reinstall them in the range hood.
How to clean the surface of your hood
Get a degreasing compound that’s made for this specific purpose. Then spray it on the hood, let it soak in, and then wipe it off with a soft cloth. If it’s necessary to scrape it, use nylon sponges and / or plastic scrapers to ensure you don’t damage the surface. Once it’s clean, rinse off the surfaces to ensure all cleaning chemicals are removed.
