When it comes to concessions, there is a thin line between making things affordable and making them cheap. Quality should always be at the center of one’s business.
This is causing controversy in Atlanta. Specifically, the Atlanta Falcons are advertising “cheap” concessions, which has inspired many people to comment on the situation.
One outlet that it taking a closer look at the Falcons’ concessions situation is Atlanta Magazine. Consider a recent article for the magazine titled “Will the Falcons’ plan to lure fans with cheap concessions work?” Max Blau of Atlanta Magazine writes, “We already knew that Atlanta’s $1.5 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium scheduled to open in 2017 will be equipped with a retractable roof inspired by the Roman Pantheon and the world’s largest HD video halo screen. This week the Falcons announced another amenity that was surprising for a different reason: dirt-cheap concessions. At a press conference on Monday, team owner Arthur Blank waved goodbye to the days of $6.50 soft drinks and unveiled his new ‘fan-first’ menu—$2 hot dogs, $3 nachos, and $5 Bud Lights—that he deemed a gesture of goodwill to loyal Falcons fans. For $28, a family of four will each be able get hot dogs, waffle fries, and refillable sodas. The billionaire’s announcement came with a pledge: Rising up no longer meant raising your credit card limit. ‘The Falcons are recognizing that [food prices] have been a sore spot for fans going to the Georgia Dome,’ said Georgia State professor Tim Kellison, who researches public stadiums and the politics behind their funding. ‘So the difference is stark.’”
With cheap concessions, the next question is whether this translates into cheap and/or non-existent measures being taken to ensure safety at these stands. Certain things should not be looked at as an afterthought. This includes fire suppression systems.
