How a Kitchen Fire Forever Changed the Haymont Grill

Monica Vendituoli of the FayObserver writes, “Since Saturday, historic Haymont Grill & Steak House owner Pete Skenteris said he has received hundreds of phone calls and texts from around the world. ‘I've had two or three calls from Greece. . I've had (messages) from officers in Iraq,’ Skenteris said. ‘I want to thank all who have been supporting us.’ A fire early Saturday morning destroyed much of the Haymont Grill & Steak House, which has been a staple in the Fayetteville community for the past 60 years. Much of the ceiling over the restaurant's kitchen collapsed in the fire, making it impossible to enter the kitchen, Skenteris said. Skenteris said he hoped to salvage some keepsakes from other parts of the Haymont Grill & Steak House after attending church Sunday, but Fayetteville police officers would not let him enter his restaurant. ‘I'm not complaining. He said, 'I'm sorry,'’ Skenteris said of the police officer who spoke with him. In addition to receiving hundreds of condolences, Skenteris said he has also received hundreds of questions from people about whether he plans to rebuild the restaurant. Skenteris will likely not know that answer for a while. He said he will have to wait for the completion of investigations by multiple law enforcement agencies and insurance agency adjusters before he makes that decision. ‘There's nothing I can do but sit back,’ Skenteris said. Fayetteville Battalion Chief Michael Martin said officials with the State Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive, the Fayetteville Police Department and the Fayetteville Fire Department will be on scene in the coming days to determine the cause of the fire.”
