Standard Exhaust Fans vs. Makeup Air Fans
Without the proper type of exhaust fan for your commercial kitchen, you’ll notice that there’s an increase of smoke surrounding your exhaust hood. All this smoke is bad for the health of your employees and customers, and can also cause expensive damage to your kitchen. To remedy this problem, you need an exhaust system that will remove large volumes of air from the kitchen area. But how do you know if you need a standard exhaust fan or a makeup air fan?
Standard Exhaust Fans
Exhaust fans keep the air moving in your kitchen. These fans clear smoke, grease and odors from your restaurant kitchen, making it a more comfortable environment for your employees to work in. These fans also remove moisture. Without the removal of this moisture, you’re likely to experience mold, mildew and bacteria growth in your kitchen, which can ultimately lead to major health code violations.
Makeup Air Fans
Makeup air fans are designed to counteract the negative air pressure created by exhaust systems in your kitchen. These fans are designed as a “draw through” heating and ventilation system. How does it work? When a makeup air fan is turned on, the damper opens and air is drawn through the shutters and forced into a tube. The tube is inflated and air is discharged at a high velocity. This high velocity causes turbulence which causes the cool outside air to mix with the heat at the ceilings.
All commercial kitchens will need some kind of exhaust fan. It’s up to you to choose the right type of fan for your commercial kitchen ventilation requirements.
