Using a Commercial Degreaser for Cleaning Vent Hoods

An important factor consider in any restaurant kitchen is how the commercial kitchen ventilation system will be kept clean. Commercial degreasing compounds are required to remove the greasy, grimy residue that builds up on the commercial hood, filters, fans and ductwork. Full removal of all residues is required on a regular basis to keep the equipment functioning properly. When selecting a degreasing product for the commercial kitchen ventilation equipment, there are a few factors to consider. First, you must know that most commercial degreasing products are quite caustic and irritating. The best advice here is to choose the least harsh chemicals that will still get the job done adequately.

Also, many of the degreasing compounds that are available for commercial kitchen exhaust hood cleaning can have very strong chemical odors. Again, finding the chemicals that leave the least amount of fumes in the kitchen area is important. This is particularly important because food preparation occurs in these areas and the fact that guests will be dining in an area that is close to where the cleaning will take place.

Cleaning with a Commercial Degreaser

Before using any commercial degreasing compounds to clean the kitchen ventilation equipment, carefully review the instructions and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Turn off the commercial kitchen ventilation system and allow all cooking areas to cool completely. Prepare the kitchen area prior to starting any cleaning process. Also, have any protective equipment, such as gloves, goggles, face masks, body protection or other protection required ready ahead of time.

During and after cleaning, be diligent about fully rinsing all equipment with clear water to remove any remaining chemicals on the equipment. Once the ventilation equipment is clean and dry, turn the system on to ventilate the area so that it is safe for working and for food preparation.
