Choosing The Perfect Walk-In Cooler Or Freezer For Your Kitchen Space
- January 11, 2022
Designing or renovating a commercial kitchen space comes with it’s own unique challenges and considerations, from the layout and design to ensuring that everything is up to your local building code requirements. There are many tedious decisions that need to be made when designing the kitchen space and one of the biggest considerations go to the heavy duty kitchen equipment, including commercial refrigeration. While the cost of walk-in coolers and refrigerators may play a role in what you decide to go with, here are some other tips that can make the process of choosing a walk-in cooler or refrigerator just a little bit easier.
Every kitchen space is unique and comes with it’s own unique characteristics and quirks that you need to take into consideration. A good jumping off point is to determine the crucial features you will need in your commercial walk-in unit. Commercial walk-in coolers and freezers are designed to increase daily efficiency, so ask yourself questions like how much food is needed daily for our kitchen?, do we need to freeze food or can we get away with keeping fresh food last longer with a cooler?, etc. These types of questions will help determine if you need a cooler / refrigerator or a freezer. Another major factor in the choosing process is size - if you are replacing an existing unit and the sizing works for you then this isn’t a huge factor, but if you need more space or are installing a new unit for the first time then the size of the unit may be the most important piece. The easiest way to find the size unit you will need is to gauge how much internal space you will need for your cooking operation and then determine the amount of empty space you have available to physically store the unit itself. It’s better to have extra space inside the unit itself rather than not enough space so take that into consideration. Now for the actual components - what type of condenser unit do you need? A bottom-mounted condenser are ideal if you have the space as they make cleaning and maintenance much easier due to ease of access to the condenser unit itself. Top-mounted condensers units help to prevent warm air from rushing into the walk-in unit whenever the door is opened, and allow for more ease when it comes to accessing items that are stored in the unit itself. And lastly - double check to make sure that whatever unit you do lean towards meets all of your local safety codes and building codes. The last thing you want to do is find a walk-in unit that seems perfect and run into headaches if it doesn’t meet safety code requirements.
