Tips & Tricks To Keep Your Walk-In Unit Running Efficiently

A Walk-In Cooler or Refrigerator is not only a necessity for restaurants, commercial kitchens, medical laboratories, and more - they are also more importantly an investment. Any time you store a large sum of money into equipment for your business it must be looked at as an investment - and taking care of your investments are just as important as the business itself. Regular maintenance and proper care will help ensure that your walk-in cooler stays functional and in tip-top shape so that you get the most out of your investment. Here are some tips to keep your walk-in cooler or refrigerator optimized for peak performance.

CHECK FANS - over time dust and debris build up on the fan components, causing drag on the blades and causing the fan motor to run at higher levels. Regular cleaning and maintenance / repairs will keep your fan running efficiently and preventing wear and tear on other components of the cooler due to irregular fan activity.

REVIEW COILS - at least twice a year you should inspect and clean the condensing and evaporator coils for your unit. Dirt and debris build up on the coils and can cause damage if not addressed in a timely manner.

CHECK DOOR GASKETS - the door gaskets help ensure the walk-in unit is air tight, which is the most important element when it comes to maintaining air temperature. Over time the door gaskets are subject to wear and tear, as well as becoming a Petri dish of bacteria and mold. Regularly cleaning your door gaskets can prevent the bacteria and / or mold, and if you begin to see cracking or other signs of damage you should replace the door gasket as soon as possible.

DOOR SWEEPS - similar to the door gasket, the door sweep is installed at the bottom of the refrigerator door and helps keep the air-tight seal that is crucial for maintaining internal temperatures. If you see any damage or tears replace the door sweep as soon as possible.

CLEAR DRAIN LINES - drain lines help ensure that any excess moisture in the unit and the components is expelled from the walk-in unit. Any excess moisture can damage walk-in components over time, and one of the main causes are due to clogged drain lines. Regular maintenance and unclogging will keep the drain lines open and clear.

DOOR HINGES - the walk-in door hinges may not seem important, however a faulty hinge could lead to door damage and other issues could arise from there. Some modern walk-in door hinges are equipped with a self-lubricating mechanism to keep the hinges optimally lubricated, however if you have standard door hinges it is recommended to lubricate the hinges at least once a year.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS - if you notice irregular temperatures inside of your walk-in and an increasing monthly utility bill, it is possible you have electrical issues with your unit. Hire a local electrician to come out and inspect the unit for faulty electrical connects or damaged equipment which could be causing unnecessary energy drains.
