Walk-In Cooler Certifications To Look For When Purchasing

There are several things to look out for when it comes to purchasing a walk-in cooler or freezer. Size of the unit, indoor vs outdoor unit, type of refrigeration system… but what about the actual quality of the manufacturing? A walk-in unit is a large investment and if you want to be sure your money is being spent on quality equipment then there are certain certifications you should look for when choosing which manufacturer to go with.

This is a commercial food equipment standard, and you want to be sure that the manufacturer is certified for at least NSF/ANSI #7 which helps to establish minimum food protection and sanitation requirements for commercial refrigeration and freezer units.

The Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) went into effect on January 1st, 2009 in an attempt to improve energy efficiency within several industries, including refrigeration and cooling. These requirements include standards for insulation, motors, lighting, and doors that pertain to walk-in coolers and freezers.

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Listed Panels help ensure that the insulated panels being used in the construction of the walk-in units are tested and evaluated for three items - burning characteristics, smoke developer index, and flame spread rating.

Underwriters Laboratory (UL) Listed Doors help to ensure that all door panel assemblies have been tested and evaluated to ensure they meet all UL required electrical requirements.

The US Department of Energy put standards into effect in July 2017 that pertain to the energy conservations standards that manufacturers of walk-in coolers and freezers must adhere to.

To ensure that you are buying a quality walk-in unit you should check that the manufacturer has the majority, if not all, of the certifications listed above. Other certifications to look for could be state certifications, and Hurricane Approved standards set in place by Miami-Dade county in an effort to strengthen outdoor walk-in units to be able to withstand heavy weather such as hurricanes.
