Is It Time To Replace Your Walk-In Cooler?

A walk-in cooler or freezer can be a crucial component of kitchen and other operations. While there is no set life-span of a walk-in freezer or cooler, there are some tell-tale signs that it may be time to replace the entire unit. It may seem like a huge expense at first, but a new walk-in unit could likely pay for itself in a year or two if the current walk-in unit is in that bad of shape.

Most walk-in coolers and freezers are guaranteed by a warranty - so if the unit is still under warranty you can likely get any parts replaced if needed for no cost. If the warranty has expired it may be a whole other story. Over time wear and tear will beat on all parts of the unit, and replacements and repairs will eventually start to pile up. If you are out of warranty and the repair bills are getting too steep it may be time to look into a new unit.

Check your electricity bill monthly, and if you start to see a steady increase month-to-month it may be your walk-in cooler or freezer. Often times this can be resolved by fixing small issues such as icing over of the cooling coils, or a door gasket that may need to be replaced. However if all items seem to be ok and running correctly it may be an indication of the insulation inside the wall panels beginning to fail. This occurs due to the seals of the panels gaining small leaks, allowing moisture to accumulate inside the insulation and thus causing the damage to the unit wall itself. If you go inside the cooler or freezer and see things like ice buildups or water / moisture build ups, it’s likely insulation failure. You can also check the thermostat - if the unit is no longer keeping the proper set temperature and everything appears to be in working condition the panels may be failing.

There is no set life-span of a walk-in cooler as many factors come into play regarding the quality of a walk-in unit. Original quality of the insulation, the refrigeration system that was used and how well it was maintained, any structural damage due to accidents… all of these can lead to issues that could shorten the life-span of an effective walk-in cooler or freezer.
